Jens Strüker ist Professor für Wirtschaftsinformatik und Digitales Energiemanagement an der Universität Bayreuth sowie einer der Leiter des Fraunhofer Blockchain–Labors. Außerdem ist er in leitender Funktion am Institutsteil Wirtschaftsinformatik des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Angewandte Informationstechnik (FIT) beschäftigt und Direktor des FIM Forschungsinstitut für Informationsmanagement.

In Forschung, Lehre und Praxis untersucht Prof. Strüker das Potential digitaler Technologien für die (Energie-)Wirtschaft. So befasst er sich mit der Frage, welche Freiheitsgrade Informationstechnologien für eine Echtzeit-Energiewirtschaft und für einen effektiven Klimaschutz bieten. Er adressiert hier insbesondere die  zur Dekarbonisierung. Die Herausforderungen reichen dabei von der technischen Interoperabilität bis zur Integration lokaler Energiemärkte und der Gestaltung eines zukunftsgewandten Marktdesigns. Im Rahmen der digitalen Dekarbonisierung untersucht er auch den Abbau von Unsicherheit hinsichtlich der CO2-Emissionen im Zusammenhang mit Konsum-, Beschaffungs- und Investitionsentscheidungen. Mittels digitaler CO2-Nachweisführung soll diese Lücke geschlossen werden, sodass konkret digitale Produktpässe, hochaufgelöste Grünstrom-Nachweise sowie CO2-Kompensationskredite entwickelt werden. Neben Kostenreduktionen bei der Datenerfassung  steht dabei insbesondere die digitale Verifikation und damit die Erhöhung der Daten- und Informationsgüte im Vordergrund. Mittels Primärdaten statt Schätzwerten können so Doppelzählungen und Fehler reduziert werden und Unternehmen werden in die Lage versetzt, konkrete Produktionsentscheidungen auch auf Basis von CO2-Informationen in Echtzeit zu treffen.

Insgesamt arbeitet das Team von Prof. Strüker mit einem breiten Methodenspektrum an der Schnittstelle von klassischen Methoden aus dem Bereich der Green IS.

Prof. Strüker engagiert sich in öffentlich geförderten und in privatwirtschaftlich finanzierten angewandten Forschungsprojekten, um neuste Erkenntnisse aus der Forschung zur Lösung praxisrelevanter Fragestellungen einzusetzen. Dabei arbeitet er sowohl mit Konzernen, mit kleinen und mittelständischen Unternehmen als auch mit Verbänden und Think-Tanks intensiv zusammen.  Er nimmt verschiedene Beiratsmitgliedschaften bei Startups sowie Aufsichtsratsmandate wahr. Des Weiteren ist Prof. Strüker regelmäßiger Keynote-Speaker bei Veranstaltungen in Europa, Asien und Nordamerika. Ergebnisse zu den von ihm untersuchten Fragestellungen präsentiert Prof. Strüker regelmäßig in internationalen Fachzeitschriften und Konferenzen, wie dem European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS), Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE), der International Conference on Information System (ICIS), der European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) und der Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). Darüber hinaus engagiert sich Prof. Strüker in der Internationalen Information Systems Community unter anderem als gefragter Reviewer.

Prof. Strüker ist studierter Diplom-Volkswirt und Historiker (M.A.). An der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg schloss er 2005 seine Promotion in Wirtschaftsinformatik am Institut für Informatik und Gesellschaft (IIG) mit summa cum laude ab. Anschließend war er bis 2012 als Postdoktorand am IIG in Freiburg beschäftigt. Nach einem Forschungsaufenthalt in den SAP Labs in Palo Alto, CA, USA (2008 – 2009) habilitierte er sich 2012 mit der venia legendi in Wirtschaftsinformatik und BWL. Von 2013 bis 2020 hatte Prof. Strüker die Süwag-Stiftungsprofessur an der Hochschule Fresenius inne und war Gründer und Leiter des Instituts für Energiewirtschaft (INEWI) in Frankfurt. Prof. Strüker ist verheiratet und hat vier Kinder.
