Prof. Dr. Tobias Guggenberger has been a Junior Professor of Information Systems, specializing in AI Strategy, Management, and Governance, at the University of Bayreuth since August 2026. In addition, he serves as a Director at the FIM Research Center for Information Management and Deputy Head of the Information Systems Research Division at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT.

Prof. Guggenberger's predominantly empirical and design-oriented research focuses on the strategic design, management, and governance of innovative information systems. His work explores how organizations can harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and successfully manage the transformations it brings. He approaches these questions from organizational, innovation, and governance perspectives, with a particular interest in the socio-technical interactions between people, technology, and organizational structures, as well as the resulting challenges for businesses and public institutions.

A key focus of his research is the AI transformation of organizations. He investigates the strategic, organizational, and technological prerequisites for successful adoption, including the development of appropriate AI strategies and governance frameworks, the adaptation of business processes and organizational structures, and the emergence of new roles and forms of collaboration between humans and AI systems. His work seeks to understand how organizations can move beyond isolated technological applications and integrate artificial intelligence sustainably and responsibly into broader organizational transformation.

Another major research area is AI-driven innovation and the design of novel digital systems. Prof. Guggenberger examines how artificial intelligence creates new opportunities for products, services, business models, and interorganizational collaboration. He is particularly interested in the interplay between AI and other emerging technologies, such as blockchain and privacy-enhancing technologies, exploring both their potential and associated challenges. His research aims to design innovative information systems that enable new forms of value creation while addressing requirements related to trust, data privacy, and responsible technology use.

Prof. Guggenberger publishes his research in internationally renowned academic journals, including Electronic Markets and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and presents his work at leading international conferences, such as the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) and the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS). He also contributes to the international Information Systems research community as a reviewer for academic journals and conferences.

Alongside his fundamental academic research, Prof. Guggenberger is actively involved in applied research and consulting projects with businesses and public institutions. By connecting scientific insights with practical challenges related to digital transformation and the adoption of artificial intelligence, he supports organizations in identifying suitable AI use cases, developing viable strategies, and designing and implementing innovative information systems.

Prof. Guggenberger earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Business Administration from the University of Bayreuth. He subsequently began his academic career at the FIM Research Center for Information Management and Fraunhofer FIT, initially focusing on the design and management of emerging technologies and innovative information systems. In 2022, he completed his doctorate in Information Systems at the University of Bayreuth with highest distinction (summa cum laude). He then continued his research as a postdoctoral researcher at FIM and Fraunhofer FIT. From 2023, he also held a temporary position as an Academic Councilor (Akademischer Rat auf Zeit) at the University of Bayreuth before being appointed Junior Professor of Information Systems, specializing in AI Strategy, Management, and Governance, in August 2026.
